Refrigeration tips

Refrigeration Tips

Energy saving fridges and fridge freezers use over 60% less energy than a typical old one.

This will give you savings of up to £45 and 180 kilograms of CO2 a year for a fridge freezer and £20 and 80 kilograms for a fridge.

Never put warm of hot food into the fridge.

By putting warm food into your fridge it will make the fridge work extra hard to try and keep cold, always allow food to cool down first.

Another good tip ...

is to defrost frozen food in the fridge as helps to keep it cool as it thaws.

The most efficient way to run a fridge.

Keep your fridge/freezer at least three quarters full.

Ensure your appliance is installed in a well ventilated area. If the ambient temperature is low (but in no case lower than 5 degrees C), then the energy saving will be more.

Ensure the time between buying chilled/frozen food and placing them in your appliance is kept at minimum, particularly in summer. We recommend you use a cool bag or a special carrier bag to carry frozen food.

Do not leave the door (s) of your appliance open longer than necessary and ensure they are closed properly after each opening.

Defrost frozen food in the fridge compartment, so that frozen food acts as an ice pack to assist cooling in the fridge.

Cooking tips

Cooking Tips

Always use the correct size pan and when heating water.

Only use the amount you need so the electricity is not burning unnecessarily to heat the excess.

If only using a small pan, then use a smaller burner and boil water in the kettle first.

This will save the time the burner needs to heat the water and putting a lid on will help it come to the boil quicker.

Don’t open your oven door during cooking.

The oven temperature reduces by 25 degrees every time the door is opened, making it take more time and energy to cook your food thoroughly than is necessary. You should try and cook the items you need for a meal simultaneously in order to reduce the time you need your oven on for.

If you have an electrical oven, turn it off before you finish cooking.

Ten minutes before your meal is due to finish cooking turn the oven off, leave the door closed and the oven will carry on cooking at the same temperature.
