How to clean a washing machine

The importance of keeping your washing machine clean and well-maintained cannot be overstated. Regular cleaning not only helps your machine to perform at its best but also ensures it lasts longer. To help you maintain your appliance, we’ve pulled together this comprehensive guide that covers everything you need to know about cleaning your washing machine. So, whether you're a seasoned pro or a first-time appliance owner, read on to discover our top tips for keeping your washing machine clean and hygienic.

How often should you clean a washing machine?

It’s important to clean your washing machine regularly. Whilst we suggest you deeply clean your machine once every 1-3 months, the frequency of your cleaning should depend on how often your appliance is used. By regularly cleaning your machine, you can prevent the build of mould, bacteria and odours, ensuring perfectly hygienic, fresh laundry every time.

Adam Norris, our Beko Senior Product Manager, recommends, “giving your washing machine a clean from time to time. Over time softener, detergent, and dirt can build up, causing some unpleasant odours. To rectify this, clean your machine with a washing machine cleaning agent. Simply add this to your detergent drawer and run a high temperature programme with no washing in the machine”.

To ensure your machine stays in top condition, we recommend following these simple steps.

Cleaning the detergent drawer

Detergent drawers can quickly build up with detergent deposits, making it harder for the detergent and fabric softener to travel into the drum. Because of this, it is a good idea to remove and clean the detergent drawer after every four to five uses of the washing machine. Cleaning your filter

The filter protects the drain pump from potential damage from foreign objects during the discharging of water, like coins or buttons. It is located on the bottom right-hand side of your machine and should be cleaned every three months, or whenever it becomes clogged. Cleaning your drum

Maintaining the performance of your washing machine includes keeping its drum clean. Cleaning the drum not only guarantees a fresh environment for your laundry but it also prolongs the life of your washing machine. With a few simple steps and household items, you can easily clean your washing machine's drum, ensuring a hygienic and efficient laundry experience. Cleaning the door seals

When cleaning your washing machine, it is important to pay attention to the door seal. Over time, dirt, lint, detergent residue, and other debris can accumulate in the folds of the seal, leading to unpleasant odours and potential mould growth. We recommend cleaning your washing machine’s seal every month to keep your appliance in top condition. Click here to read our guide on how to clean your washing machine’s door seals.

Cleaning the outside

Cleaning the outside of your washing machine is a quick and easy task that can make a big difference in the overall appearance of your appliance. To clean your washing machine’s exterior, use a mild dish soap mixed with water. Make sure to unplug the machine before cleaning, and use a microfiber cloth to clean the machine, paying attention to any buttons, dials, and crevices. Rinse and dry the surfaces to complete the cleaning process.

Utilise self-cleaning cycles

When cleaning your washing machine, look out for self-cleaning functions. Many Beko washing machines come with a self-cleaning function, such as DrumClean+, that removes the bacteria that build up and cleans the drum at a hot 70°C. Ideally use a washing machine cleaning agent when performing a self-clean programme. If your washing machine does not have a dedicated self-cleaning function, run your washing machine on an empty cycle at the hottest temperature, without using detergent. This will help to remove dirt and bacteria, keeping your appliance clean, hygienic, and ready for use.

How to clean your washing machine with household products

When cleaning your washing machine, you don't need harsh chemicals to do the job effectively. In fact, there are several household products that can help to remove dirt and grime, keeping your washing machine clean and hygienic, without spending a lot of money on expensive cleaners.

White Vinegar

White vinegar is an excellent natural cleaner that can help to remove odours and clean your washing machine’s drum. Simply add a cup of white vinegar to an empty cycle and run your machine on the hottest setting. This will help to kill any bacteria that may have accumulate in the appliance.

Baking Soda

Baking soda is another household product that can be used to clean your washing machine. It's great for removing tough stains and can also help to eliminate odours. To clean your machine and remove any built-up, add a cup of baking soda to an empty cycle and run your machine on the hottest setting.

Dish Soap

To clean the detergent dispenser, mix a solution of warm water and dish soap, and use a small brush to scrub away any dirt and grime. This will help to keep your dispenser clean and prevent any blockages.
