What is a built-in appliance?

Built-in appliances are becoming increasingly popular among homeowners who value a sleek, modern look in their kitchens. These appliances are installed directly into kitchen cabinetry, seamlessly blending in with the overall design of the room. Unlike freestanding appliances, built-in appliances are integrated into the kitchen's layout, which means that they can be customised to fit the exact space available.

Built-in appliances come in three types: built-in, built-under, and integrated. When searching for a new appliance, it's crucial to weigh their pros and cons to choose the best fit for your kitchen.

Built In Appliances

Built-in appliances are installed either directly into your kitchen’s cabinet columns or within your kitchen’s work surface. The functioning surface of a built-in appliance is visible.

Built in appliances typically include ovens, hobs, microwaves, and warming drawers.

Integrated Appliances

Integrated appliances are installed either directly into your kitchen’s cabinet columns or under a work surface in your kitchen. These appliances are fully concealed behind a hinged door panel to match the rest of your cabinetry.

Integrated appliances typically include washing machines, washer dryers, dishwashers, and fridge freezers.

Built Under

Built Under Appliances

Built-under appliances are installed under your kitchen’s work surface and directly into your kitchen’s cabinet column. The functioning surface of a built-under appliance is visible.

Built-under appliances typically include ovens and integrated dishwashers.

Measuring for a Built-in Appliance

When measuring for a built-in appliance, it is essential to get accurate measurements to ensure the product will fit perfectly in the designated space. Here are our top five tips for measuring the space correctly:

  • Using a tap measure, start by measuring the height, width, and depth of the space available.
  • The height (H) is measured from the top to the bottom, the width (W) is measured from side to side, and the depth (D) is measured from back to front.
  • Measure the space you’ve got, not your old appliance, and note down the dimensions in centimetres (cm).
  • Make sure to measure several different points in case the dimensions vary in certain places.
  • Take note of any obstacles, such as pipes or electrical outlets, that might interfere with the installation.

Redesigning Kitchen Layout

Planning on re-designing your entire kitchen? Here are our top pointers to keep in mind when deciding on where to place your new built-in appliances.

  • Give some thought to how you use your kitchen every day or how your kitchen’s new design will affect the way you use your kitchen. For example, are you planning on including an island in your kitchen? If so, consider a built-in hob for your island.
  • Think about the ease of moving from one appliance to the other in your new kitchen. Is it easy to move from your integrated fridge freezer to your built-in cooking appliances? How will the placement of your built-in appliances affect the way you carry out your everyday tasks?
  • Keep energy efficiency in mind. For example, don’t place your built-in oven and integrated cooling appliances next to each other. The heat generated from the oven will cause your fridge freezer to work harder to maintain its internal temperature, causing for greater energy consumption and higher energy bills.
  • Remember to pick out your appliances before you start designing. It’s always easier to design your kitchen’s layout when you have specific appliances in mind.
  • Be sure to share all your thoughts with your kitchen planner or kitchen studio. They can help advise you on the best layout to suit your everyday needs.
