How to fix and unlock a washing machine door that won’t open

Has your laundry finished, but you can’t open the door? It can be complicated to get your favourite jeans out of your washing machine when your door won’t open, but there could be some simple reasons why. Your washing machine is programmed to lock the door before the cycle starts and unlock it at the end, but what do you do if this doesn’t happen?

Why won’t my washing machine door open?

There are a couple of reasons why your washing machine door won’t open. One reason is timing. Sometimes, the locks can take time to release as they need to cool down. Wait some time and come back to check if your door has unlocked after a few minutes – you should be able to hear the locks open when the laundry cycle is done.

If your washing machine still won’t open, it might be because there’s too much water in the drum. Set your laundry on another spin and drain programme to remove the excess water. Once the water is thoroughly drained, your washing machine should unlock.

How to unlock a washing machine door?

If your lock is stuck on your washing machine door, you can unlock it manually.

In case of a power failure, to manually open the loading door, use the emergency handle located under the pump filter cap. First, ensure there is no water left inside the machine to prevent overflow. Turn off and unplug the appliance, then open the pump filter lid. Next, use a tool to pull down the loading door emergency handle and release it, which should allow you to open the loading door. If the door does not open, repeat this step.

How to open a washing machine door

If there isn’t excess water in your drum, your pump filter might be the cause. Check that this is drained and cleared of debris so your door can unlock.

To do this, locate the filter on the bottom right-hand side of the appliance. When you open the filter housing, there may be a large amount of water, so if your appliance has a drain tube, you can use it to reduce the amount of water in the drum. Place a container under the filter to collect the remaining water. Be sure to open the filter housing slowly to avoid too much water being released in one go. Once the water has stopped flowing out, you can then remove the filter. Cleaning the filter can be done by rinsing it under the tap. Once finished, make sure you replace the filter properly.
